From a photo of a receipt to a clean expense record.
Three stages, two model types, and a validation layer. No magic, just a well-engineered pipeline designed for real-world bookkeeping.
A vision model reads. A language model reasons. A validator checks.
Most receipts are images: thermal paper photographs, PDF printouts, or screenshots. Reading them accurately and reasoning about what they mean for your books requires two different kinds of models working together.
Snapcite chains a vision model and a language model in a structured pipeline. Each step has a defined output format, and a schema validator runs before any result reaches your expense record. If something does not pass validation, Snapcite leaves the field blank rather than putting a wrong value in your books.
Reads the image pixel-by-pixel and turns it into structured text. Handles skew, shadows, and faded thermal ink.
Parses the transcript. Extracts vendor, date, subtotal, tax, total, and line items. Assigns category. Decides business or personal.
Checks every field against a typed schema. Missing or malformed values are flagged as blank, never fabricated.
Read the receipt.
The first model to touch your receipt is a vision model: a neural network trained to understand images. It reads the receipt like a camera with comprehension, converting pixels into ordered text.
Vision models handle real-world receipts well. A photo taken at an angle on a marble counter, a crumpled piece of thermal paper from a jacket pocket, a low-contrast fax confirmation, a dense PDF invoice at any zoom level. The model picks out characters, ignores stray marks, and produces a text representation of what is on the page.
This stage does not interpret meaning. It reads.
Extract and categorize.
A language model takes the raw text from the vision stage and reasons about it. It identifies which string is the vendor name, which numbers are amounts versus quantities, and what the receipt type implies about categorization.
The model returns a structured JSON object with typed fields: vendor, date, subtotal, tax, total, a list of line items, an expense category, and a boolean for business-or-personal. The prompt instructs the model to leave a field null if it cannot determine the value, rather than guessing.
A schema validator then checks the output before it reaches your record. Numbers must be numbers, dates must parse, required fields must be present. Anything that fails the check is surfaced as blank and editable, not silently wrong.
Build the report.
Once the expense record passes validation, it lands in your expense list ready to be added to a report. Reports accumulate receipts over time and produce a tax-time summary that totals your spend by category.
No model runs at the report stage. It is plain arithmetic on validated numbers. The tax-time summary is a sum of your business-flagged expenses by category, ready for you to hand to your accountant or review yourself before you file.
- Schema-validated numbers, not raw model output
- Business and personal kept separate throughout
- Every field is editable before it lands in a report
- CSV and PDF export at any time
Not locked to one model. Routed for the best result.
Snapcite does not depend on a single AI provider. The extraction layer is built to route receipt reads across available vision and language models, choose the result that best satisfies the output schema, and fall back gracefully when a model returns something unexpected.
This means two things for you. First, the pipeline improves as the underlying models improve, with no change on your side. Second, if one provider has an outage or a rate-limit spike, processing continues on an alternate route.
Accurate on most receipts. Editable on all of them.
Current vision models read printed text on clean receipts very well. They handle most real-world conditions: mild skew, partial shadows, and standard thermal print. Handwritten amounts, heavily damaged paper, and very low resolution photos will produce less complete results.
Snapcite is transparent about this. If the model is not confident in a value, the field is left blank. Every field on every expense record is editable before you add it to a report. You are always in control of what goes into your books.
Snapcite is bookkeeping and organization support, not tax or accounting advice. Estimates and categories should be reviewed before you file.
Structured, validated, and editable.
Vision-model reading
Handles printed receipts, invoices, and screenshots at any reasonable angle or resolution.
Structured extraction
Vendor, date, subtotal, tax, total, and individual line items, pulled into typed fields.
Schema validation
Every model output is checked against a typed schema. Bad values are surfaced as blank, not silently wrong.
Model-agnostic routing
Routes across vision models. Picks the best result, falls back when needed, and improves as models improve.
Fully editable
Every field on every expense can be edited before it goes into a report. You are always in control.
Honest about limits
Snapcite does not fabricate values. Blank fields and the disclaimer are features, not bugs.
